The Helios popped into the back of our mid-sized estate in seconds, and off we went to cycle along the sea wall from Lymington to Keyhaven; a favourite path but one not possible for us now on foot, and too rough for a mobility scooter. We found cycling in tandem to be much easier than expected. The machine is light, stable, comfortable and great fun.

We were hopeful about the Helios, but were not prepared for just how good and useful it really is! The engineering is excellent, the frame is stiff, the gears are straight-forward. The bike is very, very easy to move about as the weight is predominantly at the back (hub gears). It does not look particularly small. The most amazing thing is just how easy it is to put on a car. With a fully assembled bike that is ready to ride, you turn the handle bars right round, put it on the bike carrier across the back of the car, take the front wheel off, strap it down and you are off. Anyone who is a tandem owner will have probably fainted in shock at this point! The low step over and great adjustability for kids and adults really sets this tandem apart from any other design.

Why did we buy one?
We went to try the Helios as the next step up from a tag-along bicycle for our eldest daughter (7). Anyone who has used tag-alongs knows how the slack in the fixing makes it flick between two lean angles and so the front rider has to fight to hold a sensible line (especially up hills!). Why would we spend over a grand on such an upgrade? There is no decent alternative for a kid to use and then grow into (rather than out of). We got excited about S&S couplings (only good for steel frames) and then Bike Friday but in reality both were hideously expensive in Europe. Cycling is one of the mainstays of our summer weekends and (cheap) holidays which consist of touring by caravan with 2 kids and then cycling/walking and moving on after a few days. My wife and I have had an under-used Dawes tandem for 8 years, we love the social nature of cycling it allows but REALLY hate putting it on the car roof so holidays with it have always been avoided.

Since buying an Aurora Helios tandem from you in 2015, which you retro fitted with the Heinzmann E-Bike System a few months later, we’ve been kicking ourselves for not having bought it years before. It continues to be such fun and a source of interest to the public wherever we go. Beautifully made with the highest quality components and with a splittable frame that enables us to transport it in our micro car it’s one of the best purchases my wife and I have ever made. We’re both now 80 and looking forward to years more fun.
