Why

With the Helios, we wanted to design a bike that would handle and perform at the highest level, easily fit a wide range of different size people, yet be compact for easy storage and transportation. In itself a challenging design brief, but we also wanted the Helios to transport families and their luggage or shopping!

How

By using the commonly available ISO 406 (20") wheelsize we were able to design a compact, light, yet stiff and strong frame with exceptionally low step over height - low enough at the back for even a very small child, but with the telescoping seat post, variable size geometry and very adjustable rear handlebar, also able to accommodate a 6ft adult. The front end also fits a wide range of different size people, with riders from 4'10" up to 6'5" having 'captained' the Helios.

The benefits

To facilitate storage and transportation, we have used a detachable steerer extender/handlebar and recommend detachable pedals, which in combination with the exceptionally compact frame, mean that the Helios can be transported in medium size hatchback style cars and stored in small, narrow spaces.

To complete our design brief, 'transporting families and luggage', the Helios has a dedicated rack that replaces the rear seat and can take two child seats or multiple bags. It can also take conventional racks and panniers and has a fitting at the front for attaching various different head tube mounted luggage systems.

Truly the 'bike for all reasons', the Helios is a remarkably versatile bicycle. Whether doing the school run, a fast sportif, touring in far-off places or doing the weekly shop, the Helios has the answer.

General

The Helios tandem is very adaptable and fits a wide range of stoker and captain sizes. Use the table below as guide to the range of fit. Please note that the stoker handlebar position has a huge range of adjustment and can accommodate most sizes of stoker.

Specific

The Helios makes an excellent kiddie back tandem, to optimise this aspect we recommend using crank shorteners, and a junior saddle.

Captain Stoker
Height 142-196cm / 4’ 10” to 6’ 5" 107cm-188cm / 3’ 6” to 6’ 2”
Inseam Range 65-95cm / 26” to 37” 41-91cm / 16” to 36”
Stand-over Height 63cm / 24" 51cm / 20"
Rider Weight 100kg / 220lb 80kg / 198lb (max combined weight 170kg / 374lb)

Why is the Helios called the bike for all reasons?

If you have a reason for using a bike, then the Helios will probably be able to do it! People carrying, child transportation, shopping, touring, exercise, sport, and just plain old fun, the Helios can do it all.

Will the Helios fit me?

We designed the Helios to be one size fits nearly all! We've had front riders (the 'Captain') between 4'11" and 6'5" and rear riders (the 'Stoker') between 3yrs old and 6'. The probability is that it will fit you, but if you are approaching the extremes, we recommend visiting a dealer for a fitting.

Much is made of the Helios for riding with children, how is it for two adults?

We see the Helios primarily as a bicycle for two, working perfectly with any combination of adults and children, providing they are within the size and weight recommendations. Many adult couples have used the Helios regularly for utility, all levels of touring and sportif/audax type events.

What are the rider weight recommendations?

Although the Helios is so versatile, we still wanted a bike that was light, both for transportation and for sporty performance and, as with any lightweight bike, we recommend a combined maximum weight for the riders of 170kg. Within this limitation, we recommend that the front rider should not exceed 100kg and the rear 80kg.

Why small wheels?

We use 20" (ISO 406) wheels. Tandems need strong wheels and smaller wheels offer an unbeatable combination of strength and light weight. In the ISO 406 size, there is a vast range of tyres from the super light, fast 1" Schwalbe Stelvio, through a variety of 1.5 - 1.75" general use or touring tyres, to the 2" Schwalbe Big Apple. Using the smaller wheel size also allowed us to make the tandem compact. For the first time, it is possible to transport a tandem inside a medium sized hatchback!

Can I carry luggage on the Helios?

The Helios can be fitted with a conventional rear rack for using typical bike panniers or rack top bag. It also has a mounting point on the headtube that will allow the use of a variety of bags or baskets, ideal for shopping or touring and not being attached to the fork or handlebar, there is minimal affect on the steering and handling. For heavier duty load carrying the rear seat can be removed and substituted with the dedicated Titan rack. This will take two child seats, multiple panniers, newspaper boy bags or bulkier items across the top.

The Helios is very compact, can I transport it in my car?

With the front wheel removed and the handlebar and seat posts quick released off, the Helios will stand upright across the diagonal of the luggage space (rear seats folded) of most small to medium hatch backs. There should be enough room for the front passenger and depending on the rear seat arrangement, might be room for a passenger in the back. Look at http://www.circecycles.com/helios_storage to see how we recommend doing this. It will fit across the back, or inside the garage, of most vans or campers.

Customer Testimonials

Dear Circe Cycles,
"I just wanted to tell you how thrilled we are with our new toy, delivered by your most charming and friendly agents in Christchurch. My wife has trouble with her feet, so our ability to explore and enjoy the New Forest on foot has been severely limited of late.

The Helios popped into the back of our mid-sized estate in seconds, and off we went to cycle along the sea wall from Lymington to Keyhaven; a favourite path but one not possible for us now on foot, and too rough for a mobility scooter. We found cycling in tandem to be much easier than expected. The machine is light, stable, comfortable and great fun.

Congratulations on a great product and thank you for getting us mobile again."

Robin (Captain) and Gill (Stoker) Taunt.
